Following a failed attempt to defraud £40,000 from his insurance company, 38 year old Nasir Ali has been sentenced to more than a year in prison.
Mr Ali lived in Newport with his wife Zeabun Mukhtar. In 2010 he organised a car crash between his Vauxhall Tigra and his friend’s Daewoo in order to make false claims for damages and personal injury. Mr Ali even provided his friend with the details of people who he should claim had been in his car at the time of the accident.
However, early suspicions by insurer Aviva and a swift investigation unveiled the fraud. Mr Ali soon confessed to the scam which would otherwise have cost the company £42,495.
Mr Ali’s defence was that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder but he nonetheless acknowledged being the brain behind the scheme. The judge said the fraud had been “carefully planned” and “ruthlessly executed.”
Mr Ali was jailed for 14 months and his accomplices received a range of sentences including supervisions orders and community orders.
“By working together the police, the insurance industry and private sector intelligence operatives are successfully identifying financial crime across the country; making sure that the culprits are tried and sentenced for their crimes,” said Jane Peters who is head of Operations at AGS Risk Solutions. “’Crash for cash’ fraud is a major issue for the UK’s insurance industry and every effort must be made to deter people from attempting to make a quick profit this way in the first place.”
